Man commits suicide after winning N200m contract
A 34-year-old man, simply identified as Tari, appears to have committed suicide in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, few hours after he was allegedly awarded a N200 million road contract by the state government.
Tari, who is believed to hail from Trofani in Sagbama Local Government Area, was awarded the Egbedi Road contract in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state.
The deceased reportedly swallowed a mixture of insecticide, known as sniper, and liquid bleach at his residence in Civil Servants Estate behind the office of the State Scholarship Board.
Sources close to the family said neighbours found him writhing in pains on Friday and on seeing the substance he took, his mother, a retired civil servant, was immediately contacted.
He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) and when his condition did not improve, he was taken to a church where he eventually died.
His family members are still in shock as none could explain why he took his own life since there was no suicide note.
The cause of death has divided the family, with some insisting that unknown powers might have triggered his decision to commit suicide, while some disclosed that the deceased has been receiving threat calls over some deals he had with some people.
A source, who visited Trofani on Saturday, said the incident was the subject.
Sources at police headquarters stated that operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department are already probing the incident.
