Russo-Ukraine War: Lavrov meets Chinese Foreign Minister counterpart

Lavrov said it was a very difficult time in the history of international relations and that Russia, China and other like-minded countries will likely strengthen relations to form a new world order. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi met in south-eastern China so as to discuss the on-going conflict in Ukraine and present developments in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan the Taliban took over power in August 2021. While China is perceived to be giving Russia political backing in the Ukraine conflict and has refused to condemn the invasion, portraying the U.S. and the Western NATO alliance as the main causes of the on-going crisis.

Western powers are concerned China could provide material support in the war. At the start of the talks on Wednesday in Tunxi in the south-eastern Chinese province of Anhui, Lavrov underlined Russia's interest in good relations with China, Russian state news agency TASS reported. Lavrov said it was a very difficult time in the history of international relations and that Russia, China and other like-minded countries were likely to strengthen relations to form a new world order.

This is according to TASS. "We will move together with you and other like-minded people towards a multi-polar, just and democratic world order,'' Lavrov was quoted as saying. The ministers' second meeting this year "underlines the intensity and intimate nature of the bilateral regular dialogue.'' The tensions over Ukraine have overshadowed the two-day talks about Afghanistan, which will also be attended by representatives of the United States, neighbouring countries and Afghanistan's Taliban government.
